Vickie Lake's Flat Left Wrist -- The Sounds Of Silence

As promised, here is a four-part Silent Video wherein I take an absolute beginner -- Vickie Lake -- from The Land of Can't to the Land of Can. The Gateway, as always, was the Flat Left Wrist.

The video was shot the weekend before MJ wrote his post and was never intended for the site. Nevertheless, it meets head-on the issue of Effective Stroke Training in the earliest stages of learning Golf. You will be forced to look, Look, LOOK because, unknown to me, the battery on my external microphone had died. Frankly, I view that circumstance as providential, because your attention will not be diverted by 'words' from the visual and kinestethic process used to effect the learning.

Vickie first learns to keep her Left Wrist Flat while swinging without a ball. As you will see, that discipline immediately vanishes when she is confronted with the task of actually hitting the ball! As the lesson progressess, she gradually gains the ability to make the correct motion and hit the ball at the same time.

Near the conclusion of our time together, Vickie was hitting little pitch shots with a truly sound Golf Stroke. All was not 'perfect', of course: Like a newborn colt, her Motion was still a bit wobbly, but its character was in place. In another day and time, it was Prelude to a Champion.

And though you are unable to hear it, many of her Strokes resulted in the sound of pure Compression. A sound, I might add, produced in one hour that has yet to be achieved by the majority who play the Game in their lifetime.

Lynn, what was the purpose of the "drop the club" drill? Anti-recoil therapy?

That's right, Bob. As is the unconscious habit of almost all beginners -- and even many who are well beyond that stage -- Vickie would 'hit and rake' ball after ball without taking a new Grip. The correct Address Routine involves verifying a new Grip, Plane Line and Balance for each Shot.

Also, she did not yet know Station Three -- The Finish -- as the precision destination it is. During the course of the lesson, she came to know and, more importantly, Feel, four key alignments at the Finish:

1. Left Wrist alignment.

2. Left Hand location.

3. Clubshaft position.

4. Body position and Balance.

The cure I used was to ask her to hold each Finish, verify her alignments and then totally release the Club.

If it was in the palm when do you advise going to the left hand on top of the grip? normal grip in other words.

Man did you guys catch the legs on that litte green dude?!!??!!!?? Shazaam!!!! She would have incubated the NUMBER ONE IMPERATIVE in 5 minutes if she wasn't distracted by those calves of steel. I saw her checkin' those things out.

It would be great to have sound on this one! The MASTER of All That is Collards teaching the THREE IMPERATIVES!!!!

Can we get the shorthand or transcript or something?

Don't get me wrong the Lesson with Collin was fantastic but it looks like you covered a lot of very important ground with this one!

Vickie gripped the Club under the heel of her Left Hand. I was not teaching the Basic Motion (12-5-1) per se -- two feet back and two feet through with the #3 Accumulator zeroed out -- I was teaching her to do the two things every player must do to permanently exit Hackerville:

1. Keep your Left Wrist Flat.

2. Swing through the Ball -- not at it.

Man you can tell this would have been great with audio. This is all most like a fill-in-the-blank test. What do you think Yoda said here?

I have some observations . . .

Pretty cool how her motion became more efficient when she became anchored via the steady head.

Also as you demonstrated the stance/ball position for chipping pitching and full swing, interesting how Axis Tilt would change with how the right foot was positioned away from the left shoulder.

Beginners should learn quick fast in a hurry that per 2-P The Uncocking of the Flat Left Wrist is a Perpnedicular Motion - not a Horizontal Motion. Great job teaching that as well as how all this works in the same plane that is the Left Arm Flying Wedge.

We need another beginner with sound next time. This is fantastic even without it.
