Daryl,
My significant other and I have been building our own clubs for around 10 years or so. It is primarily a hobby, but we will occasionally build clubs for friends at cost (it's for fun not profit

). The biggest advantage is customization at a reasonable cost. We can also experiment alot with different kinds of clubs and shafts without breaking the bank. You can also build clubs that it would be prohibitively expensive to buy. I have put $30 graphite shafts in a set of forged blades for example. My material cost was over $600. My labor was free, but typical markup probably would put the set over $1500

.
Depending upon how sophisticated you want to get, the entry cost can be little ($100 - $200) or much more. We are almost all in (frequency meter, swingweight scale, homemade and designed graphite shaft puller, etc...)! The only thing we don't have is a loft/lie machine although we keep our eyes open for a good used one. One day we'll probably have one.
Ultimately you get to learn how your clubs are put together and what fits your game the best. Plus you get the satisfaction of beating your friends, who paid big $$$ for OEM clubs, with your homebuilt clubs!
