Am I doing it right?

I went to an indoor practice area today to see if I had picked up anything TGM yet. I was trying to get the flat left, bent right, PP 1, and PP3 thing going only to find I was hitting the worst looking and feeling series of shots ever. I was ready to quit before I hurt someone in the room with me. Late in the bucket of balls I found that if I set up with a flat left, bent right then cocked the club down and held that firm downward cocked, flat left feel I hit some extremely crisp shots.
The only thing was I really couldn't tell what the flight of the ball would be as it hit the net after about 18 feet. I was using an 8 iron and it was hitting the net at a height of about 7 feet, and they were crisp.
Hopefully you can understand from my description what I mean.
