Horizontal Hinging

I believe you are supposed to apply angled hinging when hitting correct? Does that happen on it's own or do you have to make it happen? If I'm hitting the ball left, could I be hitting but using horizontal hinging? I'm pretty new to TGM but I'm trying to learn. Thanks
